Introduction
The Directorate of Animals Teaching and Research Center (DATRC) at Cholistan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (CUVAS) serves as a flagship platform for hands-on training, applied research, and skills development in livestock production systems of Southern Punjab. Established to support the modernization of Pakistan’s livestock sector on scientific and sustainable lines, the Directorate plays a pivotal role in bridging education, research, and field-level impact.
Currently, the directorate maintains a livestock strength of 290 animals, representing valuable indigenous genetic resources, including Cholistani and Sahiwal cattle, Nili-Ravi buffalo, Khaddali, Michni and Kari sheep, Beetal goats, horses, and camels. These herds and flock provide a living laboratory for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research-oriented programs, and practical exposure in animal management, nutrition, breeding, and health.
The core objective of the Directorate is to deliver hands-on, skill-based training aligned with modern livestock practices while promoting smart and sustainable agriculture. The center actively conducts research on precision feeding, dairy nutrition, and evaluation of novel agro-industrial by-products as alternative feed resources. In addition, it organizes farmer and youth training programs to disseminate improved livestock management practices across the Cholistan and wider Southern Punjab region.
Through innovation, capacity building, and sustainable livestock development, the Directorate of Animals Teaching and Research Center is contributing significantly to regional food security, rural livelihoods, and Pakistan’s competitiveness in the global livestock sector.
