Admission to MS/MPhil/Equivalent Degree Programs
Basic Academic Qualification:
Sixteen years of schooling or four years of education (minimum 120 credit hours) after HSSC/F.A./F.Sc./Grade 12 or equivalent shall be required for admission to the MPhil/MS/Equivalent program.
Admission Test:
The Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan, issued a notification dated May 13, 2026, regarding admissions to Graduate Programs Level 7 and Level 8 starting Fall 2026.
From Fall 2026 onward, admissions to Level 7 programs (MS/MPhil or equivalent) will be based solely on the GRE/HAT General Test and the relevant Subject Test conducted through HEC-ETC.
Admission to PhD Degree Programs
Qualification:
Prior to admission into a PhD program, the student shall have been awarded an MS/MPhil or equivalent degree as described in this policy.
CGPA:
- For admission to PhD programs, a minimum CGPA of 3.0 (out of 4.0 in the semester system) or 60% (in the annual system) in the MS/MPhil/equivalent degree being considered is required, whether obtained from Pakistani or foreign universities.
- If the CGPA/percentage is not mentioned on the transcript, the candidate must provide equivalent documentation from the parent university.
- Students with strong demonstrated interest in obtaining a PhD but with a CGPA below 3.0 (semester system) or 60% (annual system) may be admitted after fulfilling the following requirements:
- Complete additional courses of 9–12 credit hours at Level 7, taking a zero semester at the admitting university/HEI/DAI, and achieving a minimum GPA of 3.0 out of 4.0.
- The admission committee must be satisfied that the applicant’s knowledge in the primary area (Level 7) sufficiently prepares them to undertake doctoral-level studies.
- These requirements are in addition to any other conditions set in this policy for PhD admission.
Admission Test:
From Fall 2026 onward, admissions to Level 8 programs (PhD or equivalent) will be based solely on the GRE/HAT General Test and the relevant Subject Test conducted through HEC-ETC.
Statement of Purpose:
Applicants for PhD programs must submit a Statement of Purpose (SOP), which forms an integral part of the application. The admissions committee will use this to assess the candidate’s preparedness, interest in doctoral studies, and whether the department has the resources to train and supervise the candidate in their chosen subspecialty.
A Statement of Purpose should, at minimum, include:
i. Title of the potential research proposal
ii. Clear articulation of current understanding of the intended field and ideas for potential research
iii. Explanation of the intended impact of the proposed research
iv. Demonstration of passion and enthusiasm for the area of research

*Candidates from other disciplines with 16 years of education are also eligible; however, they will be required to complete deficiency courses up to 30 credit hours, as determined by the university after assessment.
