Biography

Dr. Abdul Ghaffar is Professor in the Department of Zoology and Dean, Faculty of Bio-Sciences, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Bahawalpur. He has completed his PhD in Paleontology in 2005 from University of the Punjab, Lahore-Pakistan. In his Doctoral studies, he has worked on the taxonomic studies of family Equidae, Cervidae and Carnivora from the Siwalik Hills of Pakistan. In addition to taxonomic studies, he also investigated the paleoclimates of this region to interpret the palaeoecological conditions during the time in question. Mainly these studies are related to origin, migration and evolution of different genera and species in the Siwalik’s and their interrelationships with other continents. On the basis of this research work, he accomplished more than 80 papers in different impact factor and peer reviewed journals. Dr. Ghaffar has also presented his scientific work in many national and international conferences in different countries of the World. Moreover, He has introduced the field of Biometeorology in Pakistan. Dr. Ghaffar, till date has produced 37 MS/M. Phil and 2 PhD student under his supervision and completed two research projects funded by HEC as Principal Investigator.

Initiative

Started the subject of Biometeorology in the Department of Meteorology for the first time at MS & PhD level teaching and research. The field of Biometeorology in its broader context is associated with study of interactions between the physical environments and all forms of life including terrestrial and marine vertebrates and invertebrates, plants, Algae, Fungi, Bacteria and Viruses. I focused this study on the expansion of different diseases in animals and plants. Nine students completed their MS theses on different aspects of Biometeorology under my supervision while four are in progress. Similarly, one student has completed her PhD titled “Climate Change and Urbanization Impact on Dengue Fever Transmission in Different Cities of Pakistan” and two more are in progress to take the research for their PhD’s in this subject. Moreover, I also introduced the subject of Paleoclimatology at PhD level in this department for the first time as well.

Awards and Distinctions

Introduced the subject of Biometeorology for the first time in Pakistan and started research on Dengue Dynamics (i-e an integrated approach on Climate, Urbanization and Dengue spread in Pakistan). On these aspects one student (Dr. Bushra Khalid) under my supervision completed her PhD in 2015 with significant publications in highly reputed journals and further research is in progress with more important publications helpful in Dengue control and mitigation strategies at National and Institutional levels. On the accomplishment of this work, she has received Gro Brundtland Award in February 2016 working towards the issues of sustainable development and equitable health systems with my Co-authorship.
