Biography

Dr. Rais Ahmed is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Microbiology at Cholistan University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (CUVAS), Bahawalpur, Pakistan. He holds a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), an M.Phil. in Microbiology, and a Ph.D. in Microbiology. He also served as a Visiting Ph.D. Research Scholar at the Infectious Disease Research Laboratory, Animal Health Diagnostic Center, College of Veterinary Medicine, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, USA. His academic and research expertise encompasses veterinary microbiology, molecular epidemiology, infectious diseases, bacteriology, immunology, vaccinology, and molecular diagnostics. His M.Phil. research focused on the slaughterhouse-based seroprevalence of paratuberculosis in cattle and buffaloes in Faisalabad, Pakistan, while his Ph.D. research investigated the molecular characterization of soil-borne Brucella species in Punjab, Pakistan. Dr. Ahmed has demonstrated significant experience in competitive research funding and project management. He successfully completed an HEC-funded National Research Program for Universities (NRPU) project as Principal Investigator entitled "Development of Vaccine Against Lympho Disease in Small Ruminants," with a total grant of PKR 3.95 million. He also served as Co-Principal Investigator of another NRPU-HEC-funded project entitled "Molecular Characterization and Development of Attenuated Vaccine Using Local Strains of Contagious Pustular Dermatitis Virus from Small Ruminants of Cholistan," worth PKR 8.90 million. In addition, he has submitted research proposals to several national and international funding agencies, including the Agricultural Linkages Program (ALP), Punjab Agricultural Research Board (PARB), Pakistan Science Foundation (PSF), NRPU-HEC, and the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), UK. His research proposal under ALP was shortlisted in September 2026 for submission of a full-length research proposal. Dr. Ahmed has published more than 60 research articles in national and international peer-reviewed journals, contributed over 17 book chapters, and edited one academic book. He has also published more than 27 research abstracts in national and international conference proceedings, with a reported cumulative impact factor exceeding 60. His scholarly contributions reflect a strong commitment to advancing veterinary and biomedical sciences, particularly in infectious disease research, molecular characterization, diagnostic development, and vaccine research. He is an HEC-approved Ph.D. supervisor and a lifelong member of the Pakistan Veterinary Medical Council (PVMC), holding registrations as both a Registered Veterinary Medical Practitioner (RVMP) and Registered Veterinary Medical Faculty (RVMF). He has supervised nine M.Phil. students as Major Supervisor, served as Major Member for nine M.Phil. students, and as Minor Member for three M.Phil. students. Currently, he is supervising one Ph.D. scholar. His teaching responsibilities include undergraduate, DVM, M.Phil., and Ph.D. courses in microbiology, bacteriology, immunology, veterinary virology, molecular biology, diagnostic microbiology, soil microbiology, microbial informatics, and cellular and molecular immunology. Beyond teaching and research, Dr. Ahmed actively contributes to academic governance and institutional development through participation in university and departmental committees, including the Board of Studies, departmental research committees, university development activities, and other academic and administrative responsibilities. He has also contributed to scientific capacity building through organizing research awareness seminars and delivering training in biostatistics. His overarching academic goal is to develop innovative diagnostic approaches, effective vaccines, and molecular surveillance strategies for infectious diseases affecting livestock, with particular emphasis on improving animal health, productivity, and public health through a One Health approach.
